The piece above shows a tapestry that explores the abandoned industry within Carlisle. In the top right corner there is a spool of thread that represents the cotton mills that were a huge part of Carlisles industry in the 18th century. The top left corner shows a collection of beer bottles to represent Carlisles brewing industry that had been taken over in the First World War by the government, due to the staff in munitions factories turning up to work drunk. The bottom right corner shows two Roman soldier walking along Hadrian’s wall, which represents all the industry that the romans would have brought to the city, such as road building. And finally the bottom left corner shows the wheels of a steam train which represents the transport links that the Carlisle railway would have provided to all of these lost industries.
